Circulus the lick on the
One might be forgiven for assuming that the visuals would be the most exciting aspect to the band, but on their debut they have integrated a host of influences from the golden era into their distinguished vision. While the 40 odd minute album length might be retro, the production is crystalline and the band marshals more technology in the form of confident lead guitar, synthesizers and other keys than would be the typical bill of fare, without sounding out of place amongst the citterns, flutes and crumhorns. Most impressive are the opening three tracks, "Miri" with its wayward yet spot on harmonies and rock backing leads into the stunning and hypnotic "My Body is Made of Sunlight" which Spotify deemed appropriate for my introduction to the band a month or so back. After these brilliant numbers the album settles back a bit. This is a refreshing perspective on several endearing styles that have taken a licking in recent decades but endure.

LPCDreissues: Looking forward to the past
Think of Candlelight in the mids, and the word that usually comes to mind is "metal" -- sometimes death metal and black metal, sometimes power metal, sometimes thrash metal, sometimes metalcore, but usually something metal-related. This release, however, has nothing whatsoever to do with metal or even hard rock. Instead, Circulus offers an intriguing, mystical, and very eccentric blend of British folk, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and medieval music. One hears a lot of '60s and '70s influences, ranging from Jethro Tull to the Fairport Convention to Pink Floyd to the Moody Blues -- only Circulus is much more bizarre than any of those bands. This trippy effort doesn't run away from the stereotypes of either psychedelic music or medieval folk; instead, the London-based Circulus affectionately embraces those stereotypes, and the end result is a disc that is bound to be loved by some and mocked by others.

The band uses a mix of modern and medieval instruments, such as the lute , cittern , crumhorn and rauschpfeife , along with the Moog synthesizer , bass and electric guitars. Tyack claims to believe in fairies and pixies , and they have been known to play their live shows with the audience sitting on the floor. Circulus were featured in a two-page spread of an NME issue in , and a two-page interview in Terrorizer in [ citation needed ]. Mojo magazine chose Circulus to cover " Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds " for their 40th anniversary Sgt. In , the band started its own record label, Mythical Cake, using donations solicited from fans and the public at large.
