Zuni artist Robert Leekya brought this incredible carved leaf into the Trading Post. He said it had been in his father's tool box as long as he can remember. His father is Leekya Deyuse, maybe the most famous Zuni artist of all-time. It meant it spent all those years in the toolbox because it had broken into three pieces. Robert put the Fox Turquoise leaf back together, and then polished the stone making the crack lines as faint as possible. An incredible carving that can be used as decoration or turned into a piece of jewelry.

Leekya Deyuse (1889-1966) - Zuni - Native American
Leekya Deyuse is likely the most famous of the great Zuni silversmiths. Dad had developed his relationships when he was a partner with CG Wallace at Zuni in the early 40s. No single Zuni craftsman had or has the standing as does Leekya Deyuse; nor, is any Zuni's work so highly prized for collections.
Leekya Deyuse was the head of the famous Leekya family of Zuni fetish artists. As one of the Zunis hired to work on the excavation of Hawikuh Pueblo in the s, Leekya saw first-hand the work of his ancestors and incorporated it into his fetish carvings. Early on, he understood that he must honor and protect his tribal origin, so he purposely refrained from replicating the work of his ancestors, finding a new way to depict the animals and figures that figure in Zuni culture. The whimsical, peaceful countenances on his animals provided travelers with a charming reminder of Native American harmony in their homeland.
